Today, say the words "Papaya King" to a New Yorker and hot dogs and fruit drinks will instantly come to mind. Papaya King has been called by Zagat the "best, cheapest (stand-up) lunch in the city", and a "must visit" highlight of any trip to New York City. Critic Ed Levine of New York Eats calls it the "best hot dog in the world." Over the years, Papaya King has become a tradition with local residents, tourists, political and business luminaries, and the jet set of New York society. Papaya King represents the ultimate in quick dining -- stand-up fare and ready-made juice drinks enjoyed as you rub elbows with all walks of people. Papaya King stands for inexpensive fast food made from all-natural products and the store provides a nostalgic visit to old New York.

An excellent overview of juicing by Dr. Mercola, including why to juice, who should juice and some simple and healthy steps to empower your health and your life.
From the article:
Some Reasons to Juice
There are three main reasons why you will want to consider incorporating vegetable juicing into your health program:
- Juicing helps you absorb all the nutrients from the vegetables. This is important because most of us have impaired digestion as a result of making less-than-optimal food choices over many years. This limits your body's ability to absorb all the nutrients from the vegetables. Juicing will help to "pre-digest" them for you, so you will receive most of the nutrition rather than having it go down the toilet.
- Allows you to consume an optimal amount of vegetables in an efficient manner. If you are a carb type, you should eat one pound of raw vegetables per 50 pounds of body weight per day. Some people may find eating that many vegetables difficult, but it can be easily accomplished with a quick glass of vegetable juice.
- You can add a wider variety of vegetables in your diet. Many people eat the same vegetable salads everyday. This violates the principle of regular food rotation and increases your chance of developing an allergy to a certain food. But with juicing, you can juice a wide variety of vegetables that you may not normally eat.

Aojiru is a Japanese vegetable juice made of kale.
For non-vegetable juice lovers the taste is a punishment, but for those who favour vegetable juie it is nutritious and delicious.
It is often pakaged and sold in Japan, reducing the nutritional benefit, but fresh kale juice is one of the easiest ways to stay healthy.
healingdaily.com provides a lot of information about vegetable juicing.
Vegetable juicing is critical to good health because it is an important source of raw food. Each of us needs raw foods every day, and juicing is an excellent way to make certain you receive large quantities of such raw foods.
Fruit juicing is certainly good for you, but it has one disadvantage over vegetable juicing: fruit juice tends to increase insulin levels when consumed.
Vegetable juice does not raise insulin levels like fruit juice. The only exception to this would be carrot or beet juice which function similarly to fruit juice. Nevertheless, fruit juicing is certainly better for you and your children than drinking soda, which is a very bad idea.
healingdaily.com also offers some information as to what you should juice.
Green LEAFY vegetables are the best to use in your vegetable juicing program. All green leafy vegetables work well. The easiest ones to use include all the lettuces including, but not restricted to:
- Red leaf lettuce
- Green Leaf lettuce
- Romaine lettuce
- Escarole lettuce
You can then put in some of the other similar green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and cabbage.
Cabbage juice is one of the most healing juices when it comes to repairing an ulcer as it is a huge source of vitamin U.
Herbs also make wonderful combinations. Parsley and cilantro are great in vegetable juice.
They will make a green juice for you, but you need to be persistent.
Order it with whatever you can.
They have fantastic salads, teas and it's a great place to unwind.

La Media Naranja is a great cafe in the Guadalupe neighborhood of San Miguel de Allende.
It serves excellent breakfast and lunch and a killer jugo verde or green juice. The un litro is famous on their menu. It is a litre of green juice. Some have it with pineapple but the best and healthiest combination is:
- Pepino
- Apio
- Nopal
- Perejil
- Alfalfa
- Broccoli
All juiced fresh.
Kale is definitely a super green. It takes incredible in stir fries, in salads and in soups. But it is best for you in juice, and while the flavour may take a while to get used to, it is more than worth it for the great work it does inside your body.
For greatest effect either combine kale with other leafy greens or isolate the flavour with cucumber and celery or even spinach. Kale can be used interchangeably with other bitter, leafy greens.
Recipe
- 2 bunches kale
- Alfalfa sprouts
- Bean sprouts
- 1 cucumber
- Mint
- Coriander
- Lime
A delicious and healthy way to start the day.
Carrot tops are one of the healthiest vegetables around, and people often throw them out or give them away.
They are about as tasty as dandelion, which is pretty ghastly, but they more than make up for this in nutritional benefits.
I add carrot tops to any juice in small quantities. But you can create a carrot top juice if you are especially daring. When doing so combine with milder flavours like cucumber, otherwise your juice will be very strong and the colour a disconcerting dark brown.
Recipe
- Tops from 15 carrots
- 2 cucumbers
- 1 celery
- A small amount of ginger
- Alfalfa sprouts
Sprouts and leafy greens are so alkalizing its impossible to leave them out of an alkaline diet. These are really the foundations of eating alkaline as they contribute so many nutrients to the body. Many vegetarian and vegan diets are deficient in these areas which contributes to poor health.
Juicing sprouts and leafy greens is a great way to ensure a daily intake.
Recipe
- Dandelion
- Kamut Grass
- Alfalfa Grass
- Straw Grass
- Shave Grass
- Comfrey
- Parsley
- Spinach
- Carrot Tops
- Alfalfa Sprouts
- Soy Sprouts
Combine these, juice, hold your nose and drink straight away. Your body will thank you.
Another fantastic combination is broccoli and kale. These vegetables have complementary qualities and together they taste fantastic. Use celery and cucumber to smooth out the flavour.
Recipe
1 broccoli
2 bunches of kale
1 cucumber
3 stalks of celery
Avocado's, when combined with green vegetables, make for some of the greatest smoothies known to mankind.
But avocado can also be juiced. A favourite in Vietnamese restaurants fresh avocados are combined with water and ice, served super thick in a big glass.
In many smoothies avocado is used simply as a thickener, but it is so influential in balancing the alkalinity of the body that it can be drunk by itself.
A great way to reinvigorate yourself is to add a large amount of ginger to a healthy, alkaline juice.
My favourite is a cucumber and ginger juice.
Recipe
- 2 cucumbers
- A lot of ginger
- 3 sticks of celery
- 2 bunches of spinach or kale
The juice has the kick from the ginger, the bitterness from the kale and the sweetness from the cucumber. A great start to the day.
One of the most popular juices at the moment is a shot of wheatgrass. Impossible to digest when chewed, when juiced wheatgrass has a number of remarkable health properties.
Perhaps the best introduction to this healing agent is to read the works of Ann Wigmore.
The purported health benefits of wheatgrass juice include:
- improves the digestive system
- prevents cancer, diabetes and heart disease
- cures constipation
- detoxifies heavy metals from the bloodstream
- helps make menopause more manageable
- promotes general well-being
While these claims have not been scientifically validated the importance of a natural, organic and semi-raw diet to health and well being has, and wheatgrass can be an integral part of a healthy diet if desired.
Wheatgrass is either combined with other green vegetables or served alone in a shot glass.
One of the healthiest and most common vegetable juice combinations is the carrot and beet or beetroot juice.
It is not ideal first thing in the morning because of its sweetness, but if you are feeling like a mid-afternoon treat this juice gives you a huge energy kick without any sugar.
Ideally combine freshly juiced carrot and beetroot equally.

- 1 avocado
- 1 bunch of mixed green leafy vegetables including collard, chard, spinach, silver beet or swiss chart or kale
- 1 small handfull of seaweed or kelp
- 1 shot of wheat grass juice

Blend the ingredients and drink straight away.
Articles of Health are the writings of Robert O. Young.
Dr. Young writes extensively on his theory that the human body is alkaline by design and acidic by function, in other words our thoughts, diet, behaviours and lifestyle cause acidity. He suggests that there is only one sickness and one disease which is caused by an over acidification of the blood and then tissues due to an inverted way of living, eating and thinking.
This site contains an incredible wealth of information on alkalinity and the secrets to a long, healthy life.
A great way to start any day is with a fresh cucumber and celery juice.

Broccoli..cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi, brussel sprouts…
Broccoli is a plant from the cabbage family, brassicaceae. This group of vegetables has been reported to have a role in cancer prevention. Green vegetables anecdotally have been used in juices and eaten raw to boost immunity. Science is reporting chemical pathways and undertaking clinical trials that may explain the benefits of consuming broccoli and other vegetables from the brassicaceae group.
History
The origin of the word broccoli is from the latin “bracchium” meaning arm. There is refernce to broccoli from Roman times. Broccoli is a cultivated wild cabbage that originated in the mediterranean. Domesticated cabbage has bred into varying forms including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi and brussel sprouts all of which are in the same species. It did not become popualr in the United States till the 1920’s.
Why is broccoli beneficial?
Broccoli is high in vitamin C, soluble fibre and sulfuraphanes .The fibre is described as indigestible fibre and includes cellulose which can be seen when cutting the stalk. This fibre is valuable for the digestive system because it attracts water and aids defecation.
Broccoli also contains nutrients with anticancer properties such as diindolymethane and selenium. Diindolymethane (DIM) derived from the digestion of indole 3 carbinol in broccoli has reported anticancer, antiinflammatory , antiviral ,antibiotic and hormone control effects. Broccoli has a reputation as a medicinal plant and DIM is currently involved in clinical trials. The composition of vitamins and minerals in broccoli is vitamin A, betacarotene, thiamine (B1), riboflavine (B2) niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), vitamin B6, folate, viitamin C, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, zinc.
How can broccoli consumption be increased?
Broccoli can be eaten raw in this case the nutrients are fully retained. It is prudent to rinse before consuming. It can be eaten lightly cooked and consumed hot or cold and also cooked in a soup. It is reported that boiling and steaming causes a significantly greater loss of vitmin C than microwave cooking or pressure cooking 2
What gives broccoli its colour?
Broccoli contains chlorophyll. This green pigment transforms energy fromm the sun and carbon dioxide into chemical energy in the form of oxygen and carbohydrate. This process is essential for plant life. Broccoli has a high concentration of chlorophyll.
From this knowledge one can understand that with prolonged cooking as the vegetable changes colour and becomes grey, the nutrients have reduced.
Vitamin C level is higher when the vegetable is eaten in season 3.
What about cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi, brussel sprouts?
These vegetables are related in the brassica family and are believed to act similarly.
Nursing mothers have used cold cabbage leaves on their breasts to relieve breast engorgement despite scientific validation of a benefit. Dr Pathka a Polish epidemiologist has reported, but yet unpublished, the increase in breast cancer incidence in Polish female migrants to USA may be associated with a decreased cabbage consumption from 3-4 servings in Poland to one per week in the USA.
