Is acai the new wheatgrass? People in New York seem to think so:

Wheatgrass, protein shakes — so 2002. At juice bars and health stores around the country, the hip new taste is acai, (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) a grape-size, deep-purple berry that grows atop palm trees in the Brazilian jungle. In the two years since it hit the U.S., sales have jumped fivefold to $2.5 million. “People drive out of their way to get it,” says Brandon Gough, the company’s vice president of marketing. Even non-health types are catching on: Restaurants are serving it with dinner entrées.

Fans say the fruit (which comes to the U.S. as frozen pulp) not only tastes good, but also is good for you — packed with anthocyanins, the same antioxidants that give red wine its health benefits. And, in a hat trick of health-bar chic, it’s good for the Amazon, too, because it’s collected by local families who can earn as much as $1,000 during the December-to-August harvest season (twice as much as they can usually make). “It gives them income and another land use besides cutting down the trees and raising cattle,” says Chris Kilham, who teaches ethno botany at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

NEW YORK, NY, August 2008: Superpremium juice has emerged as a small but dynamic part of the U.S. beverage marketplace, according to Superpremium Juice in the U.S.: The Impact of Superfruits and Antioxidants, a new study from Beverage Marketing Corporation. The sub–segment registered phenomenal growth during the period from 2002 to 2007, as volume jumped from 37.7 million gallons to 77.5 million gallons. Sales as measured in wholesale dollars increased at a stronger rate than volume, reflecting the impact of the premium pricing characteristic of the beverage type. Superpremium juice sales first approached half a billion dollars in 2005 and then climbed to $587 million the following year. Superpremium juice garnered $75.2 million, or 12.8%, more in 2007 than it had the year before.

The superpremium sub–segment includes fresh packaged juice, which is 100% (or very close to 100%) fruit juice that is bottled in single–serve containers and shipped fresh (or lightly pasteurized) rather than reconstituted from concentrate or chemically preserved. These juices are generally more perishable than "regular" juices, although marketers have worked to improve their shelf life. The superpremium group also includes juices that are not fresh packaged but are similarly positioned, carry high prices and are shelved in stores' produce sections. POM Wonderful pomegranate juice, with its distinctive proprietary packaging, retail channel placement, high–end positioning and price, essentially exemplifies the superpremium juice market.

Superpremium juice marketers highlight the purportedly beneficial properties of their brands' ingredients. Terms like "antioxidants" and "omega fatty acids" recur frequently in talk of superpremium juice. For instance, one currently hot fruit – açaí – is touted as possessing greater quantities of those sought after substances than another – pomegranate. Both have been dubbed "superfruits," as have black currants, blueberries, cranberries, goji berries, lingonberries and mangosteen, among others. The small, purple açaí berry from the Amazonian rainforest not only packs antioxidants and omega fatty acids; it also boasts high fiber and vitamin content. Virtually unheard of in the United States prior to the 21st century, açaí quickly attracted several eager competitors. Brands like Bossa Nova, Odwalla, Naked Juice and Sambazon now market superpremium juices using the new superfruit.

Developments in the superpremium niche can enter the fruit beverage mainstream and even affect other beverage categories. PepsiCo and Coca–Cola both added pomegranate flavors to their respective mainstream fruit beverage lines, Tropicana and Minute Maid. Major players in beverage alcohol, such as Bacardi and Anheuser-Busch, introduced superfruit–fortified offerings as well.

New York City-based Beverage Marketing Corporation is the leading research, consulting and financial services firm dedicated to the global beverage industry. Each year, the company publishes numerous authoritative market reports on New Age beverages, fruit beverages, energy drinks, soymilk and other categories. Superpremium Juice in the U.S.: The Impact of Superfruits and Antioxidants, a new report from the Beverage Marketing Corporation that discusses the use of superfruits and antioxidants in the United States and Australia:

Super-premium juice has emerged as a small but dynamic part of the American beverage marketplace, according to a new study from the Beverage Marketing Corporation titled “Superpremium Juice in the U.S.: The Impact of Superfruits and Antioxidants“.

The super-premium sub-segment includes fresh packaged juice, which is 100% (or very close to 100%) fruit juice that is bottled in single-serve containers and shipped fresh rather than reconstituted from concentrate or chemically preserved. These juices are generally more perishable than “regular” juices, although marketers have worked to improve their shelf life. The super-premium group also includes juices that are not fresh packaged but are similarly positioned, carry high prices and are shelved in stores’ produce sections. Exciting new ingredients are often used in such products, often including so-called “superfruits”.

The sub-segment registered phenomenal growth during the period from 2002 to 2007, as volume jumped from 142.7 million litres to 293.4 million litres. Sales as measured in wholesale dollars increased at a stronger rate than volume, reflecting the impact of the premium pricing characteristic of the beverage type. Super-premium juice sales first approached half a billion US dollars in 2005 and then climbed to $587 million the following year. Super-premium juice garnered $75.2 million, or 12.8%, more in 2007 than it had the year before.

The Food Matters team discuss some of the world's superfoods:

Superfoods are a category of foods found in nature, they are superior sources of essential nutrients - nutrients we need but can’t make ourselves. We all may be adding more salads and vegetables to our diets, but concern for the quality of foods grown on mineral depleted soils makes superfoods popular. They are nutritionally more potent then regular foods and are wonderful food sources of anti-oxidants for healthy healing. Superfoods are nutrient dense and calorie sparse.

They identify the following as superfoods:

  • Wheat grass
  • Barley grass
  • Wild blue-green algae
  • Spirulina
  • Chlorella
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Royal Jelly
  • Bee Pollen
  • Propolis
  • Nori
  • Kelp
  • Dulse
  • Arame
  • Wakame
  • Kombu
  • Nettle
  • Aloe vera
  • Echinacea
  • Ginseng
  • Goji Berries
  • Raw Cacao
  • Maca
  • Acai
  • Coconuts
  • Coconut oil
  • Noni

Food Matters is all about providing you with access to solid information on nutrition and natural healing.

We believe that with access to solid information people will invariably make better choices for their health and their family's health.

After travelling the globe interviewing the world's leaders in Nutrition and Natural Healing we have acquired a mass of footage explaining the finer details of nutrition and treating disease naturally. Understandably there is only so much we can fit into our 80 minute feature film so with the rest we are working on developing online learning programs.

These online learning programs will cover each of the major illnesses discussed in the film and some not yet covered at all. They will included Cancer, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Depression, Mental Illness, Obesity and also information on preventing illness and maintaining Optimum Health.

If you have purchased a DVD or signed up for our newsletter you will be notified when these programs are released.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us get this message to the world.

An Australian couple are telling the world what they know about food, and causing a stir:

If local filmmakers James Colquhoun and his wife Laurentine ten Bosch get their way, their controversial new documentary will be as well known as the big-name health documentaries to come out of the US.

The Bokarina-based nutritionists launched their film online in May and it has since been downloaded and viewed everywhere from America to Israel and Cambodia.

It was recently screened to a packed house of 600 in the Canadian city of Toronto, and critics have dubbed the film “the secret of the food world”.

Not bad for a couple who had no background in filmmaking.

“It was good we went in green because if we had known what was involved there’s no way we would have done it,” James said.

The pair studied nutrition at the Global College of Natural Medicine in California before they started to write a book outlining the “life-saving information” they had learned about food.

A post from GenX Shopping about an update to causes and treatment of cancer. The post talks about the acid environment and how a diet that is rich in vegetables, juice, grains and seeds can help:

Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts)and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

Smoothie Factory is gearing up for major expansion.

Thanks to a new financing package, the chain’s principals plan to more than double the number of locations in the next year and transition to a health and wellness café format. By the end of this year, about 90 stores should be up and running. New store openings are expected to jump to 160 by the end of 2009, says James Villasana, Smoothie Factory’s president.

“We keep seeing stronger growth year after year,” Villasana says.

The chain’s formula for success relies on two distinct revenue streams: made-to-order smoothies and juice drinks and a hefty selection of value-priced nutritional supplements, in stores that range in size from 1,200 to 1,400 square feet.

To eat or to juice?

user-pic
Vote 0 Votes

My Fluffy Life asks whether it is better to eat vegetables or to juice them?

I read in an article today that it is more beneficial to drink fruit or vegetable juice than to eat the fruit or vegetable on its own!

The reason is that when you drink the juice, all the enzymes and nutrients are easily absorbed into your body system.

However, your body needs to digest all the fruits and vegetables that you eat. And sometimes the nutrients and enzymes are not fully absorbed!

Of course we say juice!

A venture between Nestlé and Boost Juice is not performing to expectations:

Boosted Smoothies, the joint venture between Nestlé and Boost Juice Bars, is in doubt just four months after launching because the product has struggled to get supermarket listings.

It is understood that the smoothie range, which had hoped to steal share from market leader Innocent, has failed to meet the joint venture’s sales expectations.

It is believed that the range has suffered because it is only available in the impulse size, 250ml, and the larger 750ml take-home size. Insiders suggest that the impulse product has failed to get listings and that consumers have been reluctant to try the larger bottle.

Karen Kefauver can't wait to eat her way through Brasil, and rightly so. But as she points out, Juice Bars are the highlights here.

The combinations are astounding and infinitesimal.

Anti Cancer Juice

A recipe from Energise blog for a juice that contains some of the best known anti cancer vegetables:

  • 1 beetroot (medium)
  • 2 radish
  • 3 broccoli heads and stalks
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 stick of celery
  • 1/2 potato (medium)

A great party idea:

We decided to have his party at Tangerini's a local farm where he attended summer camp. The children enjoyed a beautiful day outside, including a hayride all around the property, past the giant sunflowers and out to the cornfields where the owner let each child take home eight ears of corn. YUM! She then showed us that fresh off the stalk it is totally delicious raw (sounds terrible right? But boy was it tasty!!)

The kids also got to play in the hay maze, chased the poor chickens around, visited with the goats and of course enjoyed cupcakes and ice cream.

Holstep begins a candida cleanse:

From my recent research about candida, I suspect that I have been infected with it for much of my life, possibly since childhood, and that it may well be the single biggest underlying factor in my health complaints.

Regardless of how long I’ve had it, I certainly seem to have had quite a bit of it lately, and I suspect it’s been a significant problem for much of the past 18 months or more.

Having got my mood, focus and productivity under control, my feeling is that candida is the last big health issue I need to deal with, and so I’m setting about tackling it without any further delay.

As a first step, I am attempting a juice fast for the next 5 days.

Dr. Robert Young provides an update on magnesium and its benefits:

A lack of magnesium chloride accelerates aging or fermentation of human cells, which may explain the link between any long-term deficiency and a higher risk of aging-related dis-eases, a study released just a few months ago.

Magnesium chloride is essential for hundreds of biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, and keeps bones strong.

Yet research has shown that, at least in the United States, more than half the population is lacking in magnesium due to deficiencies in their diet, potentially increasing their risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis and many cancerous conditions.

Dr Robert Young writes about Carotenoids:

Carotenoids are a group of phyto-chemicals that are a powerful alkalizing weapon against dietary and metabolic acids that cause cancer. They are found in leafy green, yellow, and some white vegetables and many fruits.

Over 600 carotenoids are found in nature, 50 of which are used in the human diet. Of these, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, beta-crytoxanthin, and gamma-carotene can be converted by the body into vitamin A. In this transformation, only the amount of vitamin A needed for health is generated, and the rest remains as the original carotenoids. For example, whether you take 10,000 IU of beta- carotene or a million, the amount of vitamin A produced in the body remains the same. This makes the carotenoids a very safe way to get your vitamin A.

Studies show that mixing some vitamin A with the carotenoids is especially beneficial for healthy white blood cells and for preventing any cancerous condition. Each of the various types of carotenoids has a different function in the body and also accumulates in different concentrations in various tissues and organs.

Potassium Rich Foods

Foods rich in potassium include:

  • Apricots
  • Avocado
  • Bananas
  • Cantaloupe
  • Melons
  • Kiwi
  • Lima Beans
  • Milk
  • Oranges
  • Orange Juice
  • Potatoes
  • Prunes
  • Spinach
  • Tomatoes
  • Vegetable Juice
  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Poultry

Compare this to the list of alkaline foods

Potassium Normalizes High Blood Pressure
Potassium is required by the body for proper functioning. Potassium can also help the body remove waste, helps with muscle contraction and aids in sending nerve impulses through the body. The problem is that most people are not getting adequate levels of potassium in their diet. This can occur because of a poor diet or because of too much sodium which flushes the nutrient.

How much potassium do you need?
The recommended daily allowance for potassium is 4,700 milligrams, though most people get much less than that. For instance, one banana is about 400 mg of potassium. That means you would need to eat 10 bananas a day! Yuck!

We recommend a diet rich in potassium and a potassium supplement. Here is a quick list of foods rich in potassium: apricots, avocado, bananas, cantaloupe, melons, kiwi, lima beans, milk, oranges, orange juice, potatoes, prunes, spinach, tomatoes, vegetable juice, meat, fish, and poultry.

All of the listings are for Jamba Juice.

Not a vegetable but interesting nonetheless:

Now the pomegranate is widely known in the food industry as a "superfruit," along with the blueberry, the cranberry and the emerging açaí berry. Besides the antioxidant power which supplies bodies with defense against free radicals which can cause degenerative illness and advanced aging, pomegranate juice has been linked to lowering bad cholesterol as well as a variety of heart-healthy benefits. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study linking lower levels of oxidation in men with the benefits of drinking pomegranate juice daily. Along with protecting the state of your arteries, pomegranates can also help fight Alzheimer's disease by increasing brain function and some studies say it may prevent skin cancer as well as destroy prostate and breast cancer cells.

Aloe Vera Juice Preservative Free This product is 100% Aloe Vera Juice - absolutely NO PRESERVATIVES! In the centre of the leaf is the fillet which is the water storage area of the plant. This contains 99.5% water and 0.5% solids. Around the fillet is the mucilage and the outer rind, this contains 12.4% solids. Therefore the largest percentage of the active ingredients in Aloe lies between the rind and the fillet of the leaf. Directions: Drink 2-8 ounces a day as a refreshing soothing nutritious juice drink. Our organic juice is equally satisfying over ice or mixed with your favorite juice.

Vegetable Juice: Raw vegetable juices, especially carrot and spinach juices, taken separately or in combination, are also beneficial in the treatment of high B.P If taken in combination, 300 ml of carrot juice and 200 ml of spinach juice should be mixed to make 500 ml and taken daily. If taken separately, one glass should be taken twice daily, morning and evening.

A comic about the global food supply:

Even a simple leaf of spinach contains hundreds of natural medicines — phytonutrients that help prevent cancer, eye diseases, nervous system disorders, heart disease and much more. Every living vegetable is a powerhouse of disease-fighting medicine: Broccoli prevents cancer, beet greens cleanse the liver, cilantro removes heavy metals, celery prevents cancer, berries prevent heart disease and dark leafy greens help prevent over a dozen serious health conditions while boosting immune function and helping prevent other infections. But when you subject these fruits and vegetables to enough radiation to kill 99.9% of the pathogens that may be hitching a ride, you also destroy many of the phytonutrients responsible for these tremendous health benefits!

A guide to Glasgow juice bars:

Forget April. January, truly, madly, depressingly, is the cruellest month. Short, cold days and long, dark nights. Huge credit card bills and all that festive family trauma still raw. Gym memberships soar, relationships founder and suicide rates rise, a pattern the police should really look into.

Honestly, this is a ridiculous time for major lifestyle changes. So why not risk a freshly squeezed juice instead? Or a quick wheatgrass shot? Come on, it tastes of grass. As does everything else for hours afterwards. But it is healthier. In an effort to shed Christmas excess, I've reluctantly had to forsake pub crawling for juice-bar sluicing. And now I'd like you to, too.

Juicing for life

A story about juicing:

I see Channah. Her skin is clear, she's healthy and radiant, and she says shes still "on the juice." (note: you don't drink just juice. You get to eat. You just eat live, raw foods and minimal refined flour, sugar, blah blah blah.)

I decided to give it another go. Only this time, I'd follow the recipes. Honestly, I wasn't fond of the taste at first (I chugged it down and then ran to brush my teeth) but thats only because I needed to "retrain my palate" if you will, after all these years of eating garbage. Sure enough, just like Channah said, you start to *seriously* actually like the juice. After a few weeks, I pretty much craved it.

My headaches are gone. I've been on the juice for a month. I'm down five pounds. And I'm soooooooooo much healthier. I even have Joel (hubby) and Olivia (baby) drinking the juice. No kidding. I put it in Olivias sippy cup, and she wolfs it down.

The gal that introduced Channah to the juice is a local nutritionist - Cherie Calbom.

New juice bars in Scotland:

Sejuiced is a new fruit and smoothie bar which has fired up its blenders on Edinburgh's Broughton Street.

The menu starts simply enough with solo juices such as orange, apple or carrot kicking off at £1.75 for a small serving.

After that, the choices rapidly get more exotic with fusion juices squaring up to power smoothies and sorbet based fruit crushes.

As always with juice bars, Sejuiced sells a range of booster shots rumoured to do everything from helping with weight loss to curing hangovers.

A post about beetrott or beets by Holistic Health Counselor Christopher Frey:

People whose diets supplied the highest average intake of choline (found in egg yolk and soybeans), and its metabolite betaine (found naturally in vegetables such as beets and spinach), have levels of inflammatory markers at least 20% lower than subjects with the lowest average intakes, report Greek researchers in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Detopoulou P, Panagiotakos DB, et al.)

An article in the Idaho statesman about the squeeze on living off a pension.

The article talks about the value of vegetable juice in terms of weight loss.

Dr. Robert Young writes about the anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties of broccoli.

Quoted from the article:

Crucifer vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, have been tied to a lower risk of strokes and heart attacks. People with diabetes face up to a 500 percent increase in risk of developing cardiovascular dis-eases that are linked to damaged blood vessels caused by metabolic and dietary acids. They also risk other health problems such as kidney dis-ease which is also caused by an excessive amount of metabolic and/or dietary acid.

High blood sugar or acid levels can cause levels of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) to increase three-fold to buffer the sugar and increased acidity. Sulforaphane activates a protein called nrf2 which protects the blood and lymphatic vessels and lowers the increase of acidity by 73 percent.

"Our study suggests that compounds such as sulforaphane from broccoli may help counter processes linked to the development of vascular disease in diabetes," said Warwick Professor Paul Thornalley. He added that in the future it will be important to see if eating a diet rich in broccoli and other crucifer vegetables will benefit diabetics. "We believe it will," he said.

Kiju organic juice

While Kiju organic juice are all fruit juices, we thought they were worth highlighting anyway.

Take yourself back to 2004. Meet Mike Kelly and Kevin Schultz, two regular Canadian guys. Both have demanding roles in the business world – one in the organic commodities industry and the other in the food and beverage business. Both happen to be health-conscious parents of active kids. Both live in the same neighbourhood. In fact, they are about to learn that they are neighbours too.

Around this time, Paul Weber (a mutual friend), was helping Mike draft a business plan to fill what Mike saw as a huge hole in the organic food movement – juices for kids and families. Meanwhile, Kevin, an experienced consumer packaged goods marketer was becoming increasingly disillusioned with “big corporate food” and was looking to make a real difference by selling food and beverages that were healthy from the inside out.

Not long after Paul introduced them, Mike and Kevin learned that they shared values around healthy family lifestyles and nature. The more they talked the clearer it became that each was passionate about ensuring their family’s long-term health.

It also became clear that their respective backgrounds gave them the ability to actually do something about it.

And so, in 2005, Nothing But Nature was born; dedicated to giving kids and adults on the go a healthy choice: Kiju® organic juice products made with 100% pure fruit juice with no sugar added. True to nature.

Fast Casual Reviews blog talks about Kagome Juice. A cross between fruit and vegetable juice:

These are all good, but at the Bite of Seattle this summer there was a booth giving away free samples of drink called Kagome. I tried. I was a convert, right away! I was 'that guy' hovering around the tent, dive bombing in, again and again to pick up yet another 'taste' from their mini cup samples. I was sure these bottles - 30 huge ozs - would be $5..$6....$7...$8...who knows these days. With the price of Kombucha at $3.00 for a 16 oz bottle, or Odwalla's going anywhere from $3.50 to $4.00 for 15.2 oz bottles, I figured high on Kagome - but no....they sell for about $3.89 retail, confirmed at the high end PCC markets in Seattle.

The juice includes:

Mango, Ruby Pomegranate, Burgundy Berry (amazing), Purple Roots, Carrot, Vegetable and Carrot Ginger....

A great juice, easy to find in Mexican, and as close to 'normal' as you can get for a green juice.

This creation requires varying quantities of:

Cucumber
Celery
Parsley and
Nopal, a Mexican cactus

It is filling, alkaline, healthy and delicious - and it almost tastes sweet.

A great article about natural treatments for eczema from Niaomi Masters.

Quoted from the article:

Eczema is a challenging skin condition for many people around the globe. The itchy, flaky rashes affect as much as 20% of the world’s children, and perhaps half of these individuals will continue to have symptoms throughout their lives. Conventional medicine doesn’t offer a cure as of yet, though some support is available through corticosteroid creams and ointments. For many eczema sufferers, and often severe eczema sufferers, conventional treatments are not enough to provide satisfactory relief. There is growing evidence however, that the treatments offered by natural medicine may provide dramatic relief for a majority of these folks. Internal cleansing and topical use of therapeutic oils can combine to create an effective healing regimen for those most affected by eczema. These modalities can reduce internal levels of toxins thought responsible for many eczema outbreaks, and provide welcome healing for inflamed and irritated skin.

She talks in detail about how juicing can help:

Cleaning up the diet, reducing processed foods and increasing intake of fresh organic vegetables will go a long way. Vegetable juice, when squeezed at home or at the juice bar (rather than bottled or canned varieties) moves the pH to a more alkaline level, and helps cleanse the system. Just drinking the juice of a single lemon in a glass of warm water first thing each morning will alkalize the blood and support the liver in toxin removal. Cleansing may be crucial to eczema sufferers, as the health of the skin is considered an indicator of the body’s toxicity level. Clear skin means a clear liver; allergic skin reaction can mean the internal organs of elimination are overloaded, and response of eczema is really the toxicity ’spilling over’ to the skin. If you feel your body is in need of a real cleanse, seek the support and advice of a knowledgeable natural health practitioner to learn the most healthful and effective means to do this for yourself.

Chard By Request

The Vegan Diet blog talks about Swiss Chard.

Chard (Beta vulgaris var. cicla), also known as Swiss chard and perpetual spinach, is a green leafed vegetable often mistaken for spinach. Regular chard has creamy white stems (ribs, stalks) with dark green leaves. In some countries red/yellow stemmed chard and red leaved chard is available. Chard is believed to originally come from Sicily and has nothing to do with the Swiss.

It is extremely nutritious. An excellent source of vitamins K, A, C and E, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium and with plenty dietary fiber. It is also a very good source of vitamins B1,B2 and B6, and tryptophan, calcium, copper, phosphorus, zinc and folate.

The vitamin K in chard, one cup providing 300% of daily requirement, helps maintain bone health, the vitamin A in chard improves eyesight and fights viral infections, and the magnesium in chard keeps your blood circulating smoothly, relaxes nerves and muscles and balances blood sugar levels. One cup of steamed chard is only 35 calories so excellent for weight loss diets. This only touches on a few ways that eating chard regularly helps to maintain optimum health.

A recipe from Martha Stewart Living.

Green-vegetable juice is sweetened with fruit juices to make a wonderful, energizing morning beverage. A piece of gingerroot adds a healthy kick and a bit of bite.

  • 1 unpeeled cucumber
  • 2 ounces green Swiss chard or spinach
  • 3 sprigs flat-leaf parsley
  • 1/2 Granny Smith apple
  • 3/4 cup cubed honeydew melon
  • 1 celery stalk
  • 1/4 fennel bulb
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger

Place all ingredients in an electric juicer and juice. Divide between two glasses and serve.

Do this without the fruit for a really great juice.

Blues, fruit, wi-fi and juice: a concept whose time has come. And that's not all: Southeast Asian food - a combination of Malaysian, Thai and Singaporean cuisines and beverages, from flower teas to Singapore-style milk tea and various coffee drinks.

Foodnavigator reports on the growth of the organic juice market.

Quoted from the article:

Data from the London-based firm implies the market is showing rapid expansion due to higher consumer demand for organic beverages, combined , crucially, with a rise in retailer penetration.

Large conventional juice firms are now bustling for a slice of the growing market, launching organic versions of their juice products.

They are dominating the supply side, either acquiring organic juice firms or adding organic juices to their product lines.

"Companies with extensive distribution networks have taken up high market share relatively quickly in a market that increasingly resembles the conventional juices market," says the report.

While not totally vegetable, this is a great fresh organic juice recipe:

  • 2 medium apples
  • 2 medium oranges
  • 2 medium carrots
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 1 small clump of ginger (approx 20 grams)

After a month we would recommend switching the apples and oranges and eventually also the carrots.

According to Top Life the benefits of the vegetables are:

Celery

Green foods have recently become a focus of modern natural health practices across Texas and the United States. Juice bars and natural health food markets in Austin, Dallas, and Houston boast smoothies with spirulina, vegetable juices with chlorella, and power shots of wheatgrass. Naturopaths have been known to prescribe super green foods to aid in the treatment of diseases ranging from asthma, to HIV, to lupus. While the incredibly rich mossy color of these supplements don't always look appealing, most of us think, Well, it's probably good for me anyway. But just how good may prove surprising. Better yet, you don't even need a health insurance policy to cover it.

One pound of wheatgrass is the nutritional equivalent of twenty-five pounds of quality vegetables. Blue-green algaes, such as spirulina, have not only high levels of vitamins and minerals, but, pound for pound, more protein than meat or soybeans, and in laboratory tests, have proven instrumental in increasing the survival rate of cancer-infected mice. Alfalfa, a common ingredient in livestock feed, actually contains all known vitamins. Most of the time, only a teaspoon or tablespoon is required to gain nutritional benefit, and, really, we're just starting to figure out the health benefits of these super foods.

While consuming these power greens may make our health insurance companies and spouses happy, most of us have trouble enough just pronouncing their names. It can be a bit confusing to figure out which green food does what. To make life a little simpler, here is a basic overview of some of the most popular super green foods, which can be easily located in the supplement section of any major natural health food market in Texas:

(1) Alfalfa

Some would argue that alfalfa, though a green food, is not a "super green food." Many practitioners disagree. This well-known, seemingly ordinary grass, often fed to livestock and horses across Texas, is one of the most mineral-rich foods on the planet. Its roots can grow as deep as 130 feet, and in addition to all known vitamins, contains chlorophyll (considered highly nutritious when processed correctly), calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. The minerals are present in a balanced form, which allows for maximum absorption.

Alfalfa is available in liquid, capsule, tablet, powder, and, of course, as the plant itself. It has been used to treat diseases ranging from arthritis to anemia, to bleeding gums, to cancer, and, like all other green foods, is still under study to discover the extent of its healing properties.

(2) Barley Grass

Containing iron, all essential amino acids, chlorophyll, flavonoids, vitamin B12, vitamin C, minerals, and enzymes, barley grass, too, is an often overlooked green food. It is highly nutritious, has been used to help treat stomach and intestinal disorders, and acts as an effective anti-inflammatory.

(3) Chlorella

One of the few edible species of water-grown algae, chlorella is virtually a complete food in and of itself. Its massive quantities of chlorophyll and protein in ratio to its size make it a power-punch for those lacking protein, as well as a storehouse of nutrition, with high levels of all the B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, amino acids, and rare trace minerals.

Chlorella offers more B12 than liver per serving, and speeds the cleansing of the bloodstream. Its high RNA and DNA content are also believed to be agents in the fight against the effects of ultraviolet radiation. A good chlorella source needs to be factory processed, however, as its tough cell wall makes it difficult for the body to access its nutrients.

(4) Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll, while available in many forms as a separate nutrient, is also listed as a powerful component within many green foods. At first this may seem odd. After all, most in Texas and across the United States were taught that chlorophyll is a plant food, bound within a tough cell wall, and of little use to humans. And while it is true that chlorophyll usually needs to be processed in order to be more easily accessible to our bodies, research reports great benefits when properly consumed.

A better understanding of the cell structure itself has shed light on the situation. Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein found in red blood cells, whose central metallic atom is iron. The main, and quite simple, difference between a molecule of hemoglobin and a molecule of chlorophyll is that chlorophyll's central metallic atom is, instead, magnesium. The two may, in fact, be so similar as to someday justify treatments for certain types of anemia with chlorophyll; experiments on anemic animals reported a return to normal iron levels after four or five days of chlorophyll treatment.

(5) Kelp

Kelp may be a bit more familiar than other green foods, as it is a seaweed common in Asian cuisine, and is actually often used in toothpastes. It can be eaten raw, dried, granulated, or ground into powder. Granulated or powdered kelp is a tasty flavoring, and can be used as a salt substitute.

Like all green foods, kelp is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. It is especially useful for its high B-vitamin and iodine content, and has, consequently, been used to treat certain thyroid diseases -- possibly a major contributing factor to the obesity epidemic seen in Dallas, Houston, and many other Texas regions. Kelp is thought to be additionally beneficial to brain tissues and their surrounding membranes, the sensory nerves, spinal cord tissue, nails, and blood vessels.

Iodine tablets are often given to those in high-risk jobs involving radiation to help protect against its effects in the event of an accident. Kelp, too, is believed to somewhat combat the effects of radiation, probably due to its high iodine content.

(6) Spirulina

One of the first microalgaes to gain public recognition, spirulina is considered by many to be a miracle food. This is one of the most popular green food supplements seen in Texas and across the United States. At 60-70% protein content, it produces twenty times more protein than soybeans on an equal area of land, and is unparalleled by any single grain, herb, or plant for its high nutrient content. Among its top nutrients are gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), linoleic and arachidonic acids, vitamin B12, essential amino acids, nucleic acids RNA and DNA, chlorophyll and phycocyanin -- a blue pigment found only in blue-green algae and proven to increase the survival rate of laboratory mice with certain types of cancer.

Research is still underway, but many practitioners claim its power to enhance the immune system, reduce cholesterol, and aid in mineral absorption. With its high protein and nutrient content, spirulina is especially helpful to hypoglycemics and those who are fasting. The super food has been used to assist in the treatment of cancer and HIV, as well as many other serious diseases affecting nutrient absorption and the immune system.

(7) Wheatgrass

Its name makes wheatgrass sound a bit like a genetically-modified new addition to the ever-growing scheme of biological experimentation, but it is, in fact, nothing of the kind. Popularized by Dr. Ann Wigmore, founder of the Hippocrates Health Institute, wheatgrass is a growing international phenomena, with its great variety of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Doctors like Wigmore have been promoting wheatgrass for over a decade and, indeed, most would claim a definite boost of energy after a single serving. It has been used as an important part of therapies used to treat wide-ranging diseases, including cancer, immunological disorders, and mental health problems. Overall, it's just a great supplement for anyone, providing a healthy shot of much-needed vitamins and a kick of natural energy. Who needs coffee?

Green foods of any kind be they kale, broccoli, or arugula -- are highly nutritious, highly beneficial, and do nothing but good things for your body. But this new era of discovering super green foods just may make nutrition on- the- go that much easier for super busy Americans, with little time to cook and prepare the nutritious meals we crave. The best recommendation is to start slowly. Mix a teaspoon of powdered super greens into a large, thick, sweet smoothie. This will help you acclimate to the taste while gaining that power-punch of vitamins. Or, like so many, just shoot it. Ask for a single serving of freshly juiced wheatgrass at your local juice bar, throw it down your gullet, and see what an energy kick you get for the day. After all, your nutrition is in your hands, and it may be just a teaspoon away.

What nutrients you put into your body will certainly affect your health as you age, and eventually your wallet as well. A post by Martin from Whine Merchant who is growing his own wheatgrass.

The benefits of Wheatgrass have been heavily debated by many especially in recent years with the UK's focus on eating well and 'Super Foods'.

Various websites describe benefits such as improved digestion, reducing blood pressure, improved ability of the body to heal wounds, chlorophyll found in the wheatgrass can prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, helping prevent tooth decay, anti-ageing abilities and can keep the hair from greying (although i wish it prevented balding instead). One shot (30ml) is apparently equal to eating one and a half pounds of green vegetables.

There is no denying it is extremely good for you and if you drink a shot a day then you will do your body many favours. But beware, the taste is not the most palatable and i definitely would not attempt drinking it with a hangover.

Although we never advocate juicing for weight loss, Practical Weightloss has an article about this that focuses on cucumber, beets and carrots.

Regine Zamor writes about raw foodism.

According to Brown, if done correctly, [raw-foodism] facilitates a level of healing, health, vitality, agelessness, disease prevention, and mental and spiritual clarity that most people don’t believe or understand to be possible.

Other benefits of raw foodism include weight loss, radiant skin, increased energy and better health. However, Brown explains, “While those things are true, that is not what raw foodism is, that is just how it’s being used, packaged, marketed, advertised and discussed in the mainstream world.”

Zamor then continues to discuss vegetable juice.

One way to start slow is to begin the day with water followed by vegetable juice, fresh from a juicer. Then slowly start replacing the processed cooked foods in your diet with fresh raw foods.
