Arden's Garden is Atlanta's premier fresh juice manufacturer. From our East Point processing plant we make fresh juice six days a week and deliver it all over the city. Our juice is available at supermarkets such as Harry's Whole Foods Markets, Whole Foods, Publix and Kroger. It's also available at coffee and bagel shops, health food stores, restaurants; health clubs - even a car wash! Our Arden's Garden retail stores are in Midtown across from Piedmont Park, in Little Five Points on Euclid Avenue, in Harry's Whole Foods Market on Powers Ferry Road in Marietta, on Roswell Road in Buckhead, on Main Street in East Point, and in the heart of Kirkwood. We offer business and home delivery as well.

The way we make our juice reflects our beliefs about health.

First, we're purists. All our fresh juices and smoothies are made from fruits and vegetables, nothing else. No sweeteners, concentrates, purees, dairy products, or even ice.

Second, we use over 20 different fruits and vegetables to make our fresh juices and smoothies. From beta-carotene to phytochemicals scientists are continually discovering how fruits and vegetables help keep us healthy. We believe that making juice from a wide variety of fruits and vegetables maximizes these benefits.

Finally, we make all our juices and smoothies fresh every day from top-quality whole fruits and vegetables that we buy ourselves. We do not use any additives or preservatives to extend shelf life because that would sacrifice nutritional value. Therefore our juices have very short shelf lives and must be refrigerated from the moment they are made to the moment that they are consumed.

Nice juice recipe from What Goes In Must Come Out Food and Goals Log, Zesty Tomato Fresh Juice Recipe:

  • 1/2 garlic clove
  • 1 celery stalk
  • 1 large tomato
  • 1/ of a green pepper

Juice and serve.

Some good restaurant tips to help you eat out when you are eating raw:

Of course, you can always order the largest salad on the menu when you go out with friends, but this gets boring after a while. Why not try going to a raw food restaurant where you can try anything on the menu? For instance, if you live in the Los Angeles area, you can visit Raw by Juliano and Ariel. This raw food restaurant has some of the best gourmet food you’ll ever taste. You’ll want to start with the dessert first in order to ready the palette for food with a little more substance, and who can argue with that? Smart drinks from the raw food restaurant include the Rainforest, which includes vanilla bean, brazil nuts, and white wine, and the Summer High, a mix of pecans, white wine, and raspberries. There are also a number of non-alcoholic teas and juices to choose from. The great appetizers, such as the Olive Plate and the Zucchini Fries are sure to keep you coming back for more as well.

There are also a number of juice bars you can visit around the world that will give you the raw food restaurant experience you want.

According to Mercola: 'Industrial farming relies on fertilizers made from fossil fuels. These fertilizes are used to replace nutrients in the soil. Organic farming, however, improves soil fertility through crop rotations, and is therefore less affected by oil prices.

Will eating organic become cheaper than non-organic? Julia Havey certainly thinks so, and when you factor in rising oil prices it all certainly makes sense:

Bottom line: Most American diets need improving, and this is true around the world. An increase of fruits and vegetables is a good start - organic or non-organic. If and when prices do come down for organic foods, certainly it will be the right choice, and this effect may also be what saves the Earth's soil from becoming completely depleted of the nutrients needed to grow healthy foods...which translates into healthier people.

The Cambridge Times is supporting new Cambridge juice bar Tree Hugging Hippy Juice Bar in its bid to win the British Smoothie Championships.

Each juice bar team will be given a mystery box of ingredients from which they must create a mouth- watering drink, which audience members will then taste and vote on.

Before the finals, Tree Hugging Hippy's owner Mark Jenner-Parson said: "It is really exciting to be through to the finals in such a big competition.

"It seems bizarre that we are up with the big boys having opened only a year ago but there was obviously something good about the smoothies we make.

"Hopefully we will pull it off on the day and whip up some tasty juices."

A post about juicing and all its benefits:

It seems that lately juice bars are giving Starbucks a run for their money, and while they certainly are not on every corner (yet) there numbers appear to be steadily on the increase.

So what is the driving force behind this grown trend?

Well, other than the fact that it tastes great, freshly made juice is rich in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids. It is by far the fastest and most effective way to give your body what it needs and to keep it working at its optimum.

You may be wondering whether you can buy natural juice instead of making it. The truth is that commercial or mass-produced juice does not contain anywhere near the high nutrient content that freshly made juice has. Processing destroys most if not all of the nutrients and most of these juices are heavy on preservatives to lengthen their shelf life.

One benefit of juicing is that fresh, organic juice is easy to digest and quickly absorbed and assimilated into your bloodstream, helping to maintain it’s natural healthy alkaline state. Your blood then carries the nutrients to various organs and body tissues to nourish and repair cells.

Nature's Squeeze, a smoothie and juice shop, opened Sept. 12 at 27 Lake St. in Monroe.

Adam Peterson, 24, of Monroe, owns the shop. His brother, Douglas, 26, of Montgomery, uses his bakery and chef skills to manage it.

The brothers decided to jump in on the smoothie "trend" sprouting up in New York City, but their seven-day-a-week operation is their own creation, not a franchise.

Their smoothies keep the lactose-intolerant in mind. Douglas Peterson blends fruits like strawberries, bananas, mangos pineapple, melons or peaches with apple or orange juice. He can also substitute the juice for soy milk, yogurt or sherbet.

Janet from Meatless in Seattle talks about her diet:

Every day, I juice kale, parsley, carrots, beets and celery in my Omega juicer. I dig raw truffles and vegetarian chili and raw pizza crusts and gluten-free, sprouted-grains. I drive miles and miles out of my way to get organic fruits and veggies and when I stumble upon a new health food store, well, I get so excited, you’d think I’d just discovered the gym where Brad Pitt works out. Last summer, I went on a 40-day organic juice and broth cleanse where not one solid crossed my lips for that entire period. (It was the best thing I’ve ever done in my life, by the way.) Each day, I put chlorophyll in my drinking water. ‘nough said!

We’re a classic Cinderella story — born of modest beginnings in the inner city. The idea of Liquid Nutrition emerged by accident from the entrepreneurial drive of two precocious yet naive students who seemingly hoped to profit from an online cement import-export business.

Luckily, they never did get to sell cement... Instead, their obsession with health and wellness naturally led them down a different path. Having located their office triangulated between three major gyms, they realized the potential for an altogether different concept. Rather than moving mountains of unappetizing grey earth, they elected to offer nutritional supplements to the patrons of those local gyms. But instead of simply mimicking the hordes of existing supplement stores, these intrepid young lads chose to sell supplements as part of smoothies, experimenting with unique combinations of fruit, juice, soy milk and nutraceuticals.

A recipe from Recipe Zaar, Spring Cleanse Vegetable Juice is a nice way to enter spring in a healthy state of mind with a very healthy body. We have changed the recipe a little, as you don't want to discard the carrot greens.

  • 4 carrots, greens included
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley

If you are going for a super cleanse discard the carrots but keep the carrot tops. You can also substitute ginger for the garlic.

The Raw Food Coach Karen Knowler presents a 10 step guide to going raw:

1: Only bring more raw foods in to your diet if you are ready for change. Eating more raw food is going to give your more energy and make you think more clearly, so
you have to have plenty of ideas for what to do with that!

2: Start gradually by replacing your usual cooked breakfast with any of the following: unlimited fresh fruit; fresh fruit smoothie; freshly squeezed fruit or vegetable juice; fresh almond milk (blend 3 parts water with 1 part almonds then strain); rehydrated prunes, apricots and figs topped with
fresh almond milk.

3: Buy a book on the subject that will give you a good overview of the subject as well as recipe ideas and what you can expect. Recommended reading: How to Get Started with Raw Foods (eBook) by Karen Knowler.

4: Begin browsing new aisles of the supermarket or visit a good health food shop.
Really take alook at what’s there and be prepared to step into another more healthy and
exciting world! Buy at least three new ingredients while you’re there – two
fresh food items such as large ripe mango and a beautiful organic Batavia
lettuce, and one for your store cupboard such as a packet of hemp seeds or a
bottle of flaxseed oil.

5: Aim to get as many fresh raw ingredients into your lunch and evening meal as
possible. You can do this easily by replacing cooked vegetables with a large juicy salad
and/or sprinkling raw nuts or seeds onto your food. Use virgin olive oil and
lemon juice to dress your salad, or blend 2 tablespoons of tahini with a fresh
tomato for richer, creamier dressing.

6: Work up to the point where three-quarters of your plate consists of raw
ingredients, with your cooked portion being the remaining quarter and of the highest quality
(no additives, ideally organic, and steamed, boiled or grilled rather than roasted, fried or microwaved). By this stage you should be feeling remarkably different and will be seriously impressed with yourself!

7: Focus next on your drinks. These are just as important as your food, if not more so, because drinks can be detrimental to health and undermine all your good work. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and any fizzy drinks (sparkling water is the healthier alternative) and increase the amount of pure water you drink. Fresh juices and smoothies are also excellent. If you fancy something hot, switch to herbal teas or experiment with other healthier alternatives such as Barley Cup.

8: When you get to this stage, give yourself a real treat! Visit a raw food cafe or restaurant for something really impressive and decadent and/or attend a live raw food class to learn more about how to make your own raw food meals and take your knowledge to another level.

9: When you feel ready for the next step, make one of your main meals entirely
raw. Replace bread with sprouted wheat bread or flax crackers. Replace meat with a
protein-rich sprouted seed pate. Replace cheese with a nut “cheese”. Add olives,
avocado, nuts, seeds, sprouted beans and seeds, or raw vegetables marinated in
olive oil and lemon juice to your main meal salad and experiment with delicious dips and dressings.

10: And finally, if you want to know how a whole day on raw food feels, make sure it’s a day when you have time to really enjoy your food and time to kick-back throughout the day to realise how good you feel. By this point you may very well have lost some weight, will have clearer skin, sparkling eyes, noticeably more energy, less puffiness and bloating and be thinking much more clearly. After this, it’s up to you – but you can get a whole raft of free information, recipes, tips and support at www.TheRawFoodCoach.com.

Have fun!

Searching for a natural cure for cancer?

When someone close to me was diagnosed with colon cancer very recently, I started to research on cancer. I went to the world’s greatest library - the internet, to look up the current cancer treatments available, and more importantly, the alternative treatments/cures available. It is unfortunate that in this day and age, the obsession with making money has made it confusing for a person looking for a real solution to these illnesses. One can never be sure whether the offered “cure” is real or just another money-making venture.

One very disturbing fact I came across was that the giant pharmaceutical companies, sometimes hand-in-hand with the government, have gone to great extremes to block cures that are not only genuine, but tested to be effective. Why? Because these big companies cannot patent and make money from these cures, since the sources of these cures originate from what God, through nature, has given us.

One such cure originated from Germany and is called the Budwig Diet or Budwig Protocol. I will let the following article do the talking for me. The article was written by an individual who like me, also wanted to know more about Budwig and credit goes to this person for the research done.

It HAS to be juice

Avinash Bharwani, from HAS juice in Mumbai, interviewed by the Hindu Business Line:

At 24, he sees himself as a creator… and so, when Avinash Bharwani decided to launch a business, he let his creative juices flow, literally. His chain of HAS juice bars in Mumbai offer “health on the go” with a range of fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies. The first outlet was launched at Juhu in May last year and within a year or so four more were opened.

“We have a lot of celebrities and the model brigade pouring in. They are health-conscious folks and find it easy to drop in for juice or a smoothie or two, on the go,” says Bharwani. The juice bar also projects itself as a hangout zone where people can meet after work or a workout and chill out over a refreshing drink.

His family runs Jetking, an IT training company, and Bharwani, the second of three sons, was keen on a new business. “I like creating new, innovative things… like new companies and products. I don’t have the patience to do the same job every day... I’d rather hire and guide someone to do that,” says the confident young entrepreneur.

Asked about his leap from the world of techies to one of smoothies, he says, “After workouts I always felt the need for a quick and healthy energiser, and realised that there were many others who felt the same.”

At the juice bar, the pick-me-ups range from the classic freshly-squeezed juices to the blended “power” juices and smoothies with low-fat milk/soymilk/yoghurt options.

Howard Stern’s perennial sidekick Robin Quivers used to pig out on Roy Rogers with him after the show, but in the past six months she has switched to a vegan diet. “I was having trouble with discomfort, lack of energy…when I discovered fasting all these things went away.” Her co-workers mock her, despite the fact that she’s lost sixty pounds in six months, but no matter. “I sometimes say to them, ‘You’re the guys who can’t make it through the show. By 9:30 a.m., you’re falling asleep. I seem to be fine.” We asked her to sell us on a life without meat and cheese.

Robin Quivers goes through a week of eating. She juices every morning.

Raw Food Juicing

A nice post about including vegetables into a raw food juice:

Raw food juicing may not be a usual practice among several households. But if you are up for the healthiest way to lose weight, you can consider shopping for raw fruits that you can squeeze in your blender and drink for detoxifying and dieting days. Drinking juice that is not mixed with any artificial sweetener is less health threatening than purchasing an already-blended shakes and smoothies from your favorite café. If you want an antioxidant which is stomach-filling at the same time, drink some juice out of raw fruits and juicy natural foods.

Angel Lightfeather looks at holistic health through juicing:

The Buddha says "Watch nature — nature is the greatest teacher." Our physical bodies are also a part of nature. I always recommend a small cleanse in the spring and in the fall. Work with the flow of nature and be well. Slowing down and resting a little more is a natural flow. Adding a small power nap into your daily schedule is a refreshing and re-energizing way to accommodate the changing of the seasons.

Be good to yourself. Do comforting and caring things that bring you peace. The aroma of an apple pie in the oven can fill your home and your heart with joy and comfort. Simply healthy is good for you.

Help boost your immune system and increase your energy. If you are feeling like you need a kick start or your “pick me up and go just picked up and left,” this cleanse may help. The cleanse should give you more energy. Your body will automatically cleanse itself. This is also great to include in your diet to stay healthy and energized all year long.

A Grove Fresh report shows that more people in the UK are aware of green issues:

Mark Philips, Sales and Marketing Director at Grove Fresh Organic, is not surprised to see how many people are realising the reward and satisfaction of going back to basics.

He comments: "The simple things in life tend to be the best and it's interesting that these new skills and interests have recently become more apparent amongst the British public. Despite the credit crunch, it is evident from this research that people still know what value for money really means to them."

The number of young professionals who grow their own fruit and vegetables has risen from 16% in 2006 to 21% in 2008.

Violet from Raw Violet talks up one benefit of juicing, flexibility:

Anytime I eat something that maybe wasn't the best idea - I have this juice. It helps within minutes and won't leave nasty calcium deposits and all sorts of other terrible chemicals that taking an over-the-counter antacid will. I have also been observing another effect of daily fresh GREEN JUICE of increased flexibility. I have been stiff and inflexible for most of my life. Even when I was a kid I couldn't bend as far as the other kids. As it turns out, if you want to be "juicier" you need to drink your juice! I had never been able to bend over and touch my toes until recently. Now - without daily stretching - I am able to put my hands on the floor in front of me.

I am AMAZED.

Dr. Young asks:

Could eating your broccoli also help patients with chronic lung disease? It just might.

According to recent research from Johns Hopkins Medical School, a decrease in lung concentrations of NRF2-dependent antioxidants, key components of the lung's defense system against inflammatory injury, is linked to the severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in smokers. Broccoli is known to contain a compound that prevents the degradation of NFRP.

The findings were published in the second issue for September of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, published by the American Thoracic Society.

Power to the juice

An article about the huge growth of Zumo Juice:

As his Zumo smoothie bar chain gets set to open its 100th outlet, Cathal Power is determined to see off his rivals and maintain the brand’s momentum.

Cathal Power spent his New Year holiday climbing volcanoes in Costa Rica and El Salvador, while his Easter getaway took him to South America, where he trekked through Amazonian rainforests and slept under the stars.

Given his choice of holiday destinations, it is hardly surprising that Power has charted an adventurous course for Zumo Smoothie Bars, his expanding juice and smoothie franchise. In the space of seven years, Power has turned Zumo from a standalone Dublin juice bar into a pan-European business with outlets in ten countries and 720 employees.

Power continues:

Zumo is adding a new outlet to its chain every six days, and Power expects to be opening two outlets a week by the end of next year. While the Irish market is close to saturation, Power believes there is plenty of room for expansion overseas.

By the end of next year, Zumo should have 210 stores in 18 countries. By 2010, Power expects that figure to rise to 300 stores, with annual sales of €120 million.

At that point, Zumo should be the number one juice bar brand across the continent of Europe, with operations in Russia, Slovakia, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Austria. No country is being ruled out, according to Power.

and for the future?

Research shows that Zumo is operating in a high-growth industry. Recent figures from Mintel show that the juice and smoothie market has grown by 60 per cent in five years, and is now the fastest-growing sector in the drinks market after bottled water.

In addition to other rival chains, the group is also vying with big off-the-shelf brands such as Innocent and PJ Smoothies, which was bought by Pepsi for stg£20 million (€25 million) in 2005. However, Power insisted that Zumo had something different to offer.

‘‘The philosophy of Zumo is that everything must be fresh. If you buy a Zumo smoothie, you will see the fruit and vegetables being juiced in front of you. That is the basis of our success. You can smell the citrus before you can see it,” he said.

‘‘Compare that with a smoothie you buy off-the-shelf in a shop. Most of those are made from concentrate, which means that the apple juice or the orange juice can be up to three years old and comes from a carton. On top of that, how many days have they been on the shelf ? This is damaging the whole industry.”

As the industry matures and becomes more sophisticated, Power acknowledged that he would face tougher opposition than low-quality competitors and orange juice concentrate. However, the businessman said he was up for the fight.

‘‘We have the product and we have the brand. I never, ever expected us to reach this size,” he said. ‘‘It has been a roller coaster of a ride - but we are not at the end of it yet.”

A post about the Chowpatti restaurant in Chicago, with 22 pages of vegetarian food.

They serve vegetable juices as well:

I began to flip through the menu. It was divided into sections of a variety of ethnicities, from Indian to Middle Eastern to Italian to Mexican.

It was only 22 pages long.

And those were just the numbered pages. Two more preceded them, one with a history of the restaurant, and the other with a table of contents for the rest of the menu.

Overwhelmed, I asked the hostess for recommendations. She pointed out the Chowpatti veggie burger, the Bombay Bhel salads, the Sev Batata Puri, and the Pav Bhaji, among other dishes.

I decided on the Pav Bhaji, a stew of steamed vegetables with seasonings served with a side of grilled French bread. I opted for a “medium” spice level from among choices of mild, medium, and hot.

The hostess then suggested a drink. Beyond a range of lhasis, milk drinks, and teas, the menu offered 28 combinations of fruit and/or vegetable juice. My eye fell on the Refreshing Fruit Cocktail, a mix of pineapple, grape, and apple juices.

But— ack! $8.95!

And yet, I’m a sucker for fresh juice.

Proof's in the eating

Family illness inspired Sydney-based filmmaker James Colquhoun to create a documentary showing that the right diet can save your life. His father had been suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome for five years and was taking a host of medications. The problem was, they had their own (commonly expected) side effects, including depression and anxiety. By the time Colquhoun approached his father, an accountant and financial adviser, with an alternative solution, he was suicidal.

The New Zealand Sunday Star Times looks at the Food Matters DVD.

JuicyJosh looks at the three types of juice: vegetable juice, green juice and fruit juice:

Well, it won’t fix your car, bring you love, or raise your kids but it might make all those things easier. Two glasses of fresh fruit and vegetable juice a day to maintain your health and at least four a day to speed the body’s healing and recovery from illness, making a regular habit of juicing and blending can literally change your life. Yes, I realize I’m going into infomercial sounding copy (always a peril when you write for a retailer) and for the bulk of this community might be common knowledge but this is important for anyone interested in healthy living. Not to mention it’s high time I write an article on the benefits of juicing overall.

Raw fruits and vegetables are probably the best source of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, cancer fighting phytochemicals and other nutrients and because more beneficial substances continue to be found in fruits and vegetables all the time, it’s increasingly clear that you cannot substitute supplements for the real thing. When you juice or blend from raw produce you get the whole plant including all its health promoting components in tact so it’s important to drink it when you make it. For the newcomer to this world, essentially there are three juicing categories to become familiar with: Green Juices; Vegetable Juices and Fruit Juices.

Green juices are cleansers. They rid the body of pollutants and have and incredible rejuvenating effect because they are rich in chlorophyll which purifies the blood and builds red blood cells. It detoxifies and heals and produces big boost of energy. 8 to 10 ounces a day is recommended using everything from alfalfa sprouts to wheatgrass.

Dr. Robert Young writes about the germ theory.

The purpose of this email is to open your mind to the illusion of the germ theory that imprisons many us and to study the history of how this illusion was created.

One must challenge everything in the modern construct of
immunology and what is said to be the immune system. The basis of modern immunology is founded on Louis Pasteur, the fraud, impostor, deceiver and self promoter. There is a serious problem to where every word and part of the anatomy must be questioned to find their use and function because of the fraud of Louis Pasteur.

Green Your Halloween

Some great tips to help you green your halloween.

Walk. Don’t drive your kids around for trick-or-treat. Stay in your local neighborhood and walk. You can save on gas, reduce carbon emissions, get some exercise, and maybe even meet some nice people.

Give away eco-friendly treats. A growing variety of organic candies is available at local health food stores or organic groceries. Also, consider searching out goodies made and sold by local vendors. This can help to avoid “food miles” that add to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Give non-candy trick-or-treat items. Consider giving non-candy items, such as organic juice boxes or apple sauce snack packs. Packages of dried fruits, such as raisins or cherries, is another option. You may get a few long faces from disappointed trick-or-treaters, but it may help to promote a healthier lifestyle.

Recycle and reuse. If you are holding a Halloween monster bash, make sure and use reusable plates and utensils instead of disposable ones that may end up in a land fill. Also, purchase candy and other goodies in bulk to limit the amount of packaging.

Don’t buy plastic decorations. Purchase pumpkins at a local farm market and carve them up to use as jack-o-lanterns for your front porch. Old bed-sheets can be made into great ghosts to hang from the front porch.

While reading some articles online I came across Vitamins Diary. I thought that they had an excellent post about tips to maintain a healthy diet. Here is my loosely edited version:

To Avoid

  • No stimulants such as sugar, coffee, tea, cigarettes, alcohol

  • No saturated (animal) fats and hydrogenated (processed) fats

  • No simple (refined) carbohydrates, including white bread, biscuits, cakes and other processed foods

  • No unnatural additives, flavorings and preservatives

Increase your consumption of

  • Dramatically increase your consumption of leafy green vegetables - both as liquid and solid

  • Eat more vegetables, raw or lightly cooked (steaming is best)

  • Eat more beans, lentils, seeds, nuts and whole grains, especially sprouted seeds and grains

  • Eat several servings of fresh fruit every day

  • Wherever possible eat organically-grown, natural, unprocessed foods

  • Drink plenty of filtered water - best if it is ionized, alkaline water

Pretty simple really?

Sweet Poison

Dr. Young talks about the huge negative impact of drinking soft drinks, even diet soft drinks:

I have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet sodas.

In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms disappear. I have seen many cases where vision loss returned and hearing loss improved markedly.

This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia. I state, "If you are using ASPARTAME (Nutra Sweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc.) and you suffer from the acidic symptoms of fibromyalgia spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps,
vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!"

The most important question is, 'Is it reversible?'
The answer is a resounding Yes! Yes! Yes!

STOP drinking sodas and diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels!

Delmarva Now talks about the 5-2-1-Almost None program:

In an effort to "fall into fitness," you may want to consider "5-2-1-Almost None: One Formula for a Healthy Lifestyle," developed by Nemours Health & Prevention Services, a nonprofit organization based in Newark, Del. Although the primary concern was to help prevent childhood obesity, this formula applies to the adult community as well.

5-2-1-Almost None means:

  1. Eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day
  2. Watching two or fewer hours of screen time a day
  3. Getting one or more hours of physical activity a day
  4. And drinking almost no sugary beverages.

A very interesting post provides another take on granola and soy.

An amazing menu of noodles, soups, salads and of course juices.

Carrot is the best alkaline option here.

Smoothies are made with Yogurt, fresh Banana & natural juices: Apple Juice, Fresh squeezed: Banana, Strawberry, Mango, Pineapple Coconut, Raspberry
Available boosters: Siberian Ginseng, Soy Protein, Nu Power, Calcium Complex, Multivitamin & Mineral Blend

There seems to be stigma attached to the new-age food genre, where the conservative ilk fear they will order raw chewy grassroots and obscure tasting tea. However that barrier has been coming down for nearly 14 years in Northeast Ohio with Tea House Noodles providing the downtown and university area of Cleveland working public a delicious and entirely fresh alternative to the fast food vortex that can be found around every corner. Considered "quick food" with an energetic punch. Tea House Noodles offers New Asian cuisine that contains no lard, is low in fat and sodium and (GASP!) is not fried. Can you imagine such a lunch?

In a study of middle-aged adults, maintaining a diet high in linoleic oil -- the main dietary polyunsaturated fat found in certain plants and vegetables such as flax, hemp and avocado -- seemed to lower the risk of developing high blood pressure.

"These results lend support to current recommendations for increased ingestion of polyunsaturated fatty acids from vegetable sources, instead of saturated fats from animal sources, for cardiovascular disease prevention," Dr. Katsuyuki Miura, of Shiga University of Medical Science, Japan said in an interview with Reuters Health.

A great - unexpected - juice

Some of the best juice while out comes from unexpected sources.

Yesterday I visited Café de casa on Recreo in San Miguel de Allende. I have been to the cafe a few times previously but only ever ordered hot water with lime. This time I had a menu placed in front of me and noticed that there was freshly squeezed carrot juice. hmmm

I asked whether they could do a pepino (cucumber), apio (celery) and perejil (parsley) juice. After some thought they said sure, why not. No sugar, add some alfalfa and nopal (cactus leaves) and there was a delicious green juice on the table ten minutes later.

I am reminded that when we need it will be provided.

It's always great to find a new juice place in town.

Treatment with green vegetable juice rich in dark-green leafy and cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage, was tested in 31 hypercholesterolaemic patients for three weeks. Green vegetable juice supplementation significantly increased the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA; P); 18:2n-6, 20:3n-6, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3, 22:4n-6, 22:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 of erythrocyte membrane phospholipid and decreased saturated fatty acids (SFA; S): 14:0 and 18:0, and therefore increased the polyunsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids (P/S) ratio markedly from 0.26 ± 0.01 to 0.49 ± 0.01 (P < 0.001). Green vegetable juice supplementation increased both n-6 and n-3 PUFA, but the increase of n-3 PUFA was greater than that of n-6 PUFA. Therefore, the n-6/n-3 ratio decreased significantly from 4.29 ± 0.42 to 3.00 ± 0.16 (P < 0.05). Plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substance production decreased, following the green vegetable juice supplementation. These results suggest that green vegetable juice may protect the erythrocyte membrane from oxidative stress, and the decrease in n-6/n-3 and increase in P/S ratio in the erythrocyte membrane phospholipid may be accompanied by rheological and functional changes in erythrocytes in hypercholesterolaemic patients.

Read Leigh Hopkins' article about the benefits of juicing.

Over the years, health experts have trumpeted the power of juicing. Doctors stress the importance of including at least 5-8 fruits and vegetables daily as part of a healthy diet, and for most people, it’s hard to imagine how this many veggies could be consumed in a day. It’s no wonder—the Standard American Diet’s focus on meat, dairy and processed foods seems to leave little room for anything else.

Many people make the shift to healthier eating by drinking a fresh juice of carrots, beets, apples, parsley or kale first thing in the morning. When raw fruits and vegetables are juiced, the body immediately responds by rapidly absorbing the vital enzymes and micronutrients that are destroyed during the cooking process. Fans of juicing report that drinking fresh juice is often followed by a surge in energy and vitality, and health advocates herald fresh juice’s anti-aging properties.

Another article from Beverley Jenkins in Organic Guide about how to choose a juicer.

Now I know the arguments that this can cause, and Beverley quite diplomatically suggests a few questions that should be answered:

To ensure you choose the most appropriate juicer for your needs, I’d encourage you to think about the following questions:

  • What is the main purpose of your juicer?
  • How frequently do you intend to make juice?
  • How much kitchen bench space do you have?
  • What sorts of juice do you want to make?
  • How easily can the juicer be taken apart?
  • How easy is it to reassemble the juicer?
  • Is it possible to access all corners of the juicer to remove excess pulp?
  • What is your budget?

Great article from Beverley Jenkins in Organic Guide - a site that is quickly becoming one of our favourite sources of green info.

Beverly discusses the benefits of juice, both scientific and anecdotal.

But you wont know until you try it!

As Beverly says:

After a relatively short period of time consuming the raw juices that I prepared, John lost weight, became more active, developed healthier skin, nails and hair, and generally felt better than he had at any other stage in his life. While admittedly the increased energy levels John enjoyed following our switch to a lifestyle emphasising organic juice are anecdotal, the rationale underpinning John’s increased energy levels is anything but anecdotal. According to our General Practitioner, it’s highly likely that, as a result of John being overweight and having misused alcohol for a number of years his liver was no longer functioning optimally. By switching to a lifestyle incorporating fresh organic juice, John’s liver was better able to remove toxins from his body, process food nutrients more efficiently and regulate his metabolism. Not surprisingly, this made him feel much better.

A wonderful website and a real must visit for anybody serious about their health.

Organic Guide was first published in 1987. At that time, it was a simple double-sided two-page document containing information and tips on organic gardening. Distribution of Organic Guide was limited to the South Western suburbs of Sydney, Australia where it was sold at local fetes and fairs. Work on a revised and updated Organic Guide commenced in mid-2005. A decision was made to open the publication to an international audience. And for this purpose, the domain name, www.organicguide.com was acquired.

Please visit their site. It is well worth it.

Again açai is in the news. While not a vegetable after gorging myself on açai throughout Brasil years ago I remember it so fondly that I have to publish everything about it:

Earthlight Natural Foods in Stroudsburg has been selling açai products and answering questions on its benefits more now that it is mainstream. "The products with açai berry are flying off our shelves," said Earthlight Natural Foods general manager Jennifer La Porta-Peschel. Earthlight sells Sambazon products such as açai berry smoothies.

The cost of açai products might shock many. Single-serve smoothies and juices are generally between $3 and $4 each. A bigger bottle of juice can run up to about $6 or $7.

There are many companies trying to jump on the açai bandwagon by selling product that they claim is pure açai berry.

Black explained that many of the companies selling açai are sending spam e-mails promoting their product, but don't be fooled by them: "Many of the companies out there are selling a product that doesn't have the same health benefits that they are claiming." There are some companies that only use a small percentage of açai in their product, and it does not have the same benefits that the pure açai foods have.

Ok, so watch out for açai scams please.

The Beet goes on

An article in Nova News about a new vegetable garden:

The focus is on the wonderful properties of beets or beetroot:

There are few things better fresh from the garden than baby beet greens drizzled with vinegar and butter. The pigment that gives beets their rich, purple-crimson color-betacyanin - is also a powerful cancer-fighting agent, especially colon cancer. They also contain powerful nutrient compounds that help protect against heart disease and birth defect.

Beets have the highest sugar content of all vegetables, yet are very low in calories. Their value grew substantially in the 19th century when their concentrated source of sugar was discovered, and the first sugar factory was built in Poland. While in Germany two years ago I remember seeing huge mounds of sugar beets at the ends of fields. The piles were an impressive sight.

Serving suggestions for beets include:

Grating them raw for a delicious and colorful addition to salads or decorative garnish for soups; adding chunks of beet when roasting vegetables in the oven; serving homemade vegetable juice - a quarter of a beet will turn any green drink into a sweet pink concoction, pleasing both the eyes and the taste buds. Sauté beet greens with other braising greens such as chard and mustard green or marinate steamed beets in fresh lemon juice, olive oil, and fresh herbs.

The Edmonton Sun helps parents pack a healthier school lunch!

They advise to do without sugar and pack plenty of healthy treats:

Our grocery stores also offer a wide variety of products especially meant for lunches, such as several "snacks" wrapped in attractive packaging for children.

However, it can be very useful to take a careful look at the list of ingredients of several of these products. You will often be surprised to see that some of them contain great amounts of sugar.

It is therefore better to make them occasional treats.

Instead, always add at least one or two servings of vegetables (carrots, celery, peppers and vegetable juice) and a fruit for dessert. This way, it will be a lot easier for your children to consume the daily minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables.

Good eating habits start at a young age, and lunches, just like all daily meals, can significantly contribute to these habits.

Green Juice and Green Anxiety

Laura from OneEarth magazine talks about making and drinking green juice and its impact on the environment. She buys her juice from the LifeThyme Natural Market in New York.

I’m one of those strange people who drink green juice. For the past few months I’ve been drinking it for breakfast: spinach, parsley, celery, apples, and lemon on a typical day. Usually I buy it; a guy named Melvin makes it at the LifeThyme Natural Market on Sixth Avenue, which I pass on my walk to work. His juice comes out better than mine. I never get the proportions right. For example, this morning I made my own and I put too much lemon in, tried to correct it by adding extra pear, but it didn’t work. So the juice I’m drinking as I type this is a little on the tart side today.

It’s like having a giant salad, liquefied, of course, so I’m doing a good thing for my health, and for the health of the earth. As far as my health goes, sticking to a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in processed foods is one of the best things I can do for myself. I drink this green juice for breakfast and then I actually eat a salad for lunch, with avocado or walnuts or something in there to add some protein and fat to the mix. So for most of the day I’m a vegan, though I can’t call myself one: I go back to being a flesh-eating omnivore after the sun sets.

Plenty of vegetable juice recipes on the Soy Quick website. Just substitute cucumber with whatever fruit they suggest.

We like the Simply Green and the Spinach Surprise:

Simply Green

  • 2 stalks of celery

  • 4 large spinach leaves

  • 1 half cup parsley

  • 2-3 inch round of wheatgrass

Wash greens thoroughly, cut up celery and juice. You can dilute this juice with ¼ cup of water if it's too strong.

Spinach Surprise

  • 5 carrots
  • 6 spinach leaves
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 1/4 turnip
  • 4 sprigs of parsley

Wash everything, peel the carrots, cut into sections where needed, and juice.

Anything you would love to know about wheatgrass? This site has everything you could need to know about it.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Wheatgrass Juice is a superior detoxification agent compared to carrot juice and other fruits and vegetables. Dr Earp-Thomas, associate of Ann Wigmore, says that 15 pounds of Wheatgrass is the equivalent of 350 pounds of carrot, lettuce, celery, and so forth.
  • Liquid chlorophyll washes drug deposits from the body.
  • Chlorophyll neutralizes toxins in the body.
  • Chlorophyll helps purify the liver.
  • Chlorophyll improves blood sugar problems.
  • In the American Journal of Surgery (1940), Benjamin Gruskin, M.D. recommends chlorophyll for its antiseptic benefits. The article suggests the following clinical uses for chlorophyll: to clear up foul smelling odors, neutralize strep infections, heal wounds, hasten skin grafting, cure chronic sinusitis, overcome chronic inner-ear inflammation and infection, reduce varicose veins and heal leg ulcers, eliminate impetigo and other scabby eruptions, heal rectal sores, successfully treat inflammation of the uterine cervix, get rid of parasitic vaginal infections, reduce typhoid fever, and cure advanced pyorrhea in many cases.

The site has hundreds of quotes, links to books and almost anything you could possibly want to know about wheatgrass.

Green Juice Fast …Day #5

Denise Mari from Organic Avenue in New York discusses her current cleanse:

i made it.. :) slept well (other than my puppy-love Ahimsa waking me b/c of his spring fever).. slept and woke without hunger.. and feel as though the key.. is truly keeping it to the day.. I have been up for 3 hours and have only had approx 16oz of kangen(alkalized, ionized) water ..and am still not hungry.. even for a juice. Though.. since I am getting ready to attend my first meeting of the day.. I have one green juice pulled from the fridge as I write.. letting it get closer to room temperature. Drinking cold beverages is disastorous on digestion.. Raw and living foods do not necessarily mean cold.. you can always allow things to room temp, or set them in a dehydrator set for 105 degrees to warm something and still get the abundance of nutrients and live enzymes we are looking to achieve.

A film from Video Jug that explains how to make a green juice with a juicer or blender.

The juice contains celery, spinach, spirulina, cucumber, ginger and apples. We would obviously recommend this without the apple juice.

The video is moderately useful. How hard is it to juice some veggies right?

Anyway check it out if you like.

Don’t overlook the Banana Manna shakes, made solely from bananas and ground sunflowers ($2.50) or almonds ($3) and blended with your choice of juice. They’re as creamy as a banana milkshake and provide the perfect base for a superfood add-in, such as E3 Live, a frozen organic blue-green algae harvested wild in Oregon; Dr. Green’s, made from alfalfa, barley grass, blue-green algae, herbs, probiotics, enzymes and antioxidants; or the nutrient-dense standby, wheatgrass. Naturally, all are available straight up in a shot for the more hardcore.

Beverly Hills Juice has no shortage of those. Otto considers his clientele hip, creative and health conscious. They’re repeat customers and his best salespeople. Raw Energy

Raw Energy is all about providing living food. We don't believe in killing our food before
we eat it, we'd rather have live enzymes feed the cells of our body to make us healthy and
strong. We don't like chemicals and wouldn't want to obtain disease like mad cow or
radiation. We don't like sugar (which the body has no idea what to do with and just jams
up into your colon to rot). We don't like being cheated by people who sell water or ice in
their "juice" drinks. We LOVE the taste of organic food over stuff grown in all sort of
ungodly soil conditions. We love hearing stories of people who have learned how to
heal themselves by digesting live enzymes instead of heavily processed foods. Our
labor is largely a labor of love. Much work goes on behind the scenes each week
to bring you the best in crackers, fresh produce and high quality offerings.

Want to know what juicer is best? Read this post first before you buy your vegetable juicer:

Okay, here’s the lowdown on juicers and why the two-stage juicers are better than the centrifigal juicers. The problem with centrifigal juicers is two-fold. (1) The centrifigal action of the machine causes the juice to heat up and to be thrown around quickly and violently - destroying the enzymes and other valuable nutrients your body needs. (2) In addition to heating up the juice, the centrifigal juicers actually leave a lot of nutrients in the pulp. With the two-stage juicers, the pulp is pressed so every bit of of the nutrients is pressed into the juice.

Drink Your Way Healthy

Another post that let's you know that juicing is a great health option. Convinced yet? Read more then:

We all know that incorporating Vegetables into your diet is crucial for both weight loss and leading a healthy life, agreed? Now why is it that 9 in 10 adults do not consume the daily recommended amount of vegetables, some simply do not like the taste and others do not know a way to creatively cook with it. Well the good news is you don’t have to be creative to ingest the daily recommended vegetable dose, the bad news is that you still have to eat it. However there is an exception to this rule, where exactly does it say that you have to “Eat” these vegetables? you can more than likely get away with consuming most if not all of your veggies in liquid forms such as vegetable juice

Innocent Drinks

Innocent Drinks is a UK company that makes smoothies, thickies, super smoothies and veg pots.

They use great ingredients, for example the pea and broccoli soup has:

Peas (16%), water, cooked brown rice (13%) (water, brown rice), brocolli (10%), spring greens, borlotti beans, kidney beans, onion, spinach (4%), black turtle beans, crème fraiche (2%) (contains milk), potato, vegetable oil, parsley, watercress, garlic, mint (0.5%), cornflour, sea salt, lemon juice, black pepper

For more fun view their Veg-Art gallery.

Foodie at Large discusses the smoothies at Innocent:

“Smoothies came from the idea of making it easy for people to get fruit into themselves, and we wanted to do the same for veg,” says Reed (left). “But most people don’t like drinking vegetable juice, so we had to go down another route.”

The result is a tub stuffed full of raw broccoli, kale, spinach, pulses and other dull but worthy foodstuffs. Pop them in the microwave for a couple of minutes, give them a stir, and the transformation is complete: you’ve got three of your five a day sorted. I really think it is going to revolutionise the office lunch and give us a much-needed alternative to the sandwich.

The four launch flavours, which go into Waitrose today, were developed by a chef at the Fat Duck, who wisely eschewed snail porridge for Moroccan squash tagine with giant couscous and fresh coriander; Thai coconut curry with soya beans, pak choi and wild rice; Tuscan bean stew with tomatoes, kale and fresh parsley; and pea and broccoli rice with spinach, crème fraiche and mint.

What is eating clean?

Eating clean is the process of cleaning up your diet. This includes reducing the amount of processed foods you consume and reducing sugar intake.

Eating Clean Works discusses clean eating, what it means and how to go about it. It's a great resource. Follow the link or view information below:

In a nutshell, eating clean is the practice of eating whole, natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates. It also means staying away from the junk that typically makes up the Standard American Diet (S.A.D) These types of food include man-made sugar, bad fats (hydrogenated, trans-fat), preservatives, white bread, and any other ingredients that are unnecessary. An easy way to remember if a food is clean is: “if man made it, don’t eat it.”

A person that eats clean generally practices the following:

  • Eliminates refined sugar
  • Cooks healthy meals
  • Packs healthy meals
  • Makes healthy choices when dining out
  • Drinks a lot of water
  • Eats 5-6 small meals per day
  • Eliminates alcoholic beverages (or significantly limits it)
  • Always eats breakfast

Eating clean can be a major transition for a majority of people due to addictions to sugar, white bread, and fast food. It takes discipline in order to make eating clean a habit but it is possible and has so many long-term health benefits.

A great juice recipe from Clean Eating.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 1 carrot
  • 1/2 cup parsley
  • 3 celery ribs
  • 1/4 lime

Directions

  1. Wash vegetables and parsley very well and shake to dry.

  2. Slice cucumber portion in half lengthwise so it will fit easily into the juicer's feeder.

  3. Juice cucumber and carrot. Juice parsley, and then finish with celery.

  4. Squeeze lime into juice, stir gently and enjoy.

A former Zuka and Jamba Juice executive who played a strategic role in growing the Zuka Juice brand to 108 stores in eight Western states has launched his own smoothie and juice bar concept called Roxberry Juice.

Designed around a retro, soda shop-type interior with 30s and 40s bar stools and Roxberry branded art work, as well as T-shirts, hats and aprons worn by staff that have a distinctive "throwback" feel, Roxberry Juice opened its first store in the Hunter's Crossing Shopping Center in American Fork, Utah in March. By the first quarter of 2009, Roxberry Juice will operate four more stores in Utah.

Davis said he believes Roxberry Juice will be successful because of the business decisions he has made about the quality and freshness of the ingredients -- using fresh squeezed orange juice in smoothies instead of bottled; 100% pure fruit juice without added sugar or preservatives, and his insistence on IQF or individually quick frozen fruit. "I've been in the smoothie business for nearly 15 years and am very familiar with what other brands are putting in their smoothies. I decided that our market position would be to produce the highest quality products with the best natural and freshest fruits, juices, yogurts and other ingredients as possible. We believe we have a product that's superior to other brands and in blind taste tests, have already confirmed that." Adding, that "there are a lot of juice bars trying to do what's right, but no one quite gets it."

Davis, who was a partner and executive with entrepreneur Dave Duffin -- creator of the Utah-based Zuka Juice and Rumbi Island Grill concepts -- said his vision for Roxberry Juice is to develop it into a national brand through company stores and franchising.

Roxberry Juice offers more than two dozen smoothie choices, some with healthy add-ons like protein and energy boosts, or 100% fruit and fruit juice. Unique to Roxberry Juice are "Roxi Rolls" -- a soft, sweet, pull-apart roll that Davis personally created and then worked with Stone Ground Bakery in Salt Lake to produce. Roxberry Juice also sells jams and jellies under their own label. For more information go online to http://www.roxberryjuice.com.

Boost Juice has another fan

Ian in Singapore is a big fan of Boost Juice.

First up is the kingpin of juice bars in Melbourne called Boost Juice. Apparently rising to fame after swatting off other competing bars in a heated "Juice Bar War," seriously... or at least according to my cousin. Now while you can see the appeal of a massive ice cold smoothie in sweltering weather, it came as a surprisingly pleasant surprise in the Melbourne cold. I tasted a banana and chocolate smoothie as well as a berry mix. Not only were they delicious, they were also reasonably priced and ridiculously large, enough to last three twenty-somethings the hour long journey home, with some left over.

100 Different Things likes the taste of juice from Robek's:

One day recently, in search of a Starbucks or Coffee Bean, I went into a Robek’s to tide me over. I got a “Robek’s Rejuvenator” with a “Powerbek boost” for extra energy…it woke me up more than coffee, espresso, chai, Red Bull ever did. And…it lasted longer…

And there was no crash!

They taste great too, like an ice smoothie. This is no green/orange veggie juice that you have to hold your nose to get down. It’s yummie.

One con - they’re expensive. A large (very tall) cup is almost $5…but I only have 1 a day, instead of 3 cups of coffee, so I guess it works out evenly.

And it’s so much healthier. I’m smilin a lot more! ;-)

When corporations go local

Creative loafing discusses Whole Foods and its support of local growers and suppliers:

Here's a way to feel better about your rampant consumerism: Although it's tough, Whole Foods does go out of its way to support locally grown and produced goods. Regional buyers comb the state looking for producers who can give them the volume of natural goods they need to support their fourteen and growing locations in Florida. Sometimes that means co-ops, like Uncle Matt's Organic Juice, with 15 farms, many of them owned by relatives of the eponymous Matt. Some stores are also buying gelato machines from Italy and using recipes and materials from a Fort Lauderdale-area gelateria.

Coca Cola has bought

Huiyuan, more than one-fifth-owned by France's Danone, controls 10.3 percent of a Chinese fruit and vegetable juice market that grew 15 percent last year to $2 billion.

Also quoted:

The takeover of Huiyuan would be Coke's largest acquisition since last year's $4.1 billion purchase of vitaminwater maker Glaceau.

Coca-Cola, which also makes Minute Maid juices, Powerade sports drinks and Aquafina bottled water, is paying a high premium to strengthen its grip on the domestic juice market, and it may have plans to sell Huiyuan's drinks abroad.

Linda from Law of Attraction Secrets discusses the importance of water to the human diet:

Pure water is merely two molecules of hydrogen gas and one molecule of oxygen gas in liquid form. The ratio of negative to positive ions will determine its acidity or alkalinity. The activity (formerly called concentration) of positive charged hydrogen to the negative charged hydroxide or oxygen bonded hydrogen will determine whether it has a positive or negative ionic charge. This is extremely important which I will discuss in a moment.

Water is a universal solvent. This means it has the ability to detoxify the body at a cellular level. Depending on our activity and environmental temperature, the average adult in the United States loses one half (1/2) gallon of water/fluids per day through perspiration, respiration, urination and defecation. If we don’t replace this amount of water on a daily basis, we slowly dehydrate. The most obvious sign of dehydration is dry, flaky, wrinkled skin. However, a misinterpreted signal of thirst is hunger. Most of us eat when we should be replacing fluids with bio-available water.

Simply, water is so vital; we can only live a few days without it. Matter-of-fact, rapid dehydration causes heart and kidney failure and death. Gradual dehydration leads to a litany of signs, signals and symptoms often mistaken as disease. Proper hydration is so critical; it is the first common denominator in The HONSTEC Syndrome. As you may recall, The HONSTEC Syndrome is seven common denominators anyone of which cause illness. The ‘H’ stands for hydration or lack of it.

Jane from Jane's Journey to Wellness posts some of her favourite articles describing how people suffering cancer had cured themselves through nutrition.

Most of the stories involve a change to a raw, vegetarian diet and the consumption of vegetable juice.
